Vocation to be a priest
What do I do next?

The first and most obvious thing to do is to pray. We have some prayers for vocations here but you might want to use your own words. Find a quiet spot away from anything that could distract you. Then imagine you are chatting with your best friend - talk but also listen!

Have you discussed your vocation with your parents? You don't need to be 100% certain that you will end up as a priest - your sense of calling is going to grow and it will be shaped by your time in the Seminary. Your parents should neither treat you as an already ordained priest, nor should they discourage you or suggest you are the wrong material to be a priest.

Discuss things with either your local priest or any other priest you admire and respect - choose someone will will not just answer your questions, but will be a companion on the road of discovery.

Be involved in the life of your parish family. You are always called to service. You might be an altar server, a member of the choir, a eucharistic minister, a reader etc. Or perhaps you could visit someone who is housebound or ill. Ask your priest.

Eventually you will want to get in touch with your Vocations Director - they will often organise weekends where others will come together who want to explore and discuss their calling. Your priest will let you know who that contact is, or you could 'Google' it - "Vocations Director Diocese of ...".

There are two kinds of priests - those who work in the Diocese with their Bishop, and those who are Religious, such as Franciscans, Salesians, Benedictines - you may be drawn to the latter, in which case again ask your priest for a contact - they too will run weekend retreats.

Do view the video Fishers of Men - it is inspiring. Then have a look at the questions for discussion. God will pour out his blessings on you for even thinking about your vocation - more so for praying about it. Look at the seminary interviews - do you want to be 100% happy for the rest of your life? God is calling you!
